Sustaining Walkability: Summit Street Project
Summit Street, a main corridor of Downtown Toledo, has the ability to connect businesses along it while also connecting Toledoans to the Maumee Riverfront.
Key Findings & Challenges
Toledo Design Collective, in conjunction with ConnecToledo, completed a phased working plan and vision for adding planters along Summit Street. While currently Summit Street is highly walkable, adding more color and additional places for users to congregate only supports the larger downtown Toledo vision.
Solutions
The Planter Plan illustrates “clusters” of planters of various sizes in key nodes along Summit Street. The cluster approach allows more flexibility of users and keeps them moving along the corridor. The clusters were strategically placed at highly traveled intersections of Summit Street and all of the businesses and amenities that line it. One large congregation of clusters were placed around Levis Square entry from Summit Street, and also the entry of the recently updated Promenade Park. This helps to connect downtown Toledo users from Summit Street to the Maumee Riverfront.
